The Future is Overwhelming

Printer-Friendly Format

One Step at a Time

I believe that if you have dreams and goals that you should dream big.

Shoot for the stars.... whether in fitness or in life there is no reason to short change yourself.

The problem with that is that you can overwhelm yourself with your goals.

If you are constantly focused on great big giant goals it will be very difficult to get started.

I personally had a huge problem with this.

I had so many plans for what I wanted All 4 Sports and Fitness to represent and accomplish, but what happened was it seemed so big that most of the time I did nothing.

I would procrastinate and do little things that didn't make a big difference. Don't get me wrong....I did work, just not on the important things that would get me moving towards my goals. The tasks just seemed so big.

When I started to break those goals up into mini-short term goals, things started to move forward.

I believe that the same is true in fitness. Big giant goals lead to big giant procrastination!!

Break it down into tiny pieces, give yourself timelines, and experience little successes all the way to your big goal. Much more fun!

We have provided a downloadable goal sheet that you can fill out and submit to us.

Enjoy the Journey

The other thing about the future that I feel obligated to mention is about the concept of anticipation.

Have you ever wanted something, like a new car, a new house, a new girlfriend, or boyfriend?.

I am sure you have experienced setting a goal and achieving it at one time in your life....

What happened about a month after you got it?

For me, in college I worked day in and day out to go to a regional championship and receive All American honors.

My team never made it to the NCAA regional but I did receive All American Honors.

4 years of hard work and dedication paid off!!!

I got everything I ever wanted........a plaque for my wall???

Was that it.... all that hard work for this?

What I realized was that it wasn't completing the goal at all, but the experience and process of getting there.

To be honest, I wish I would have acknowledged that at the time I was going through it.

I probably would have enjoyed my career more, rather than thinking of it as a means to an end.

Think about it.... during the days after you buy a new car and are waiting to pick it up you are so excited to get it.

What do you think of that car now?

I doubt you are that excited when you hop in your car and head over to the gym.

Sometimes we tend to focus so much on the other side without appreciating what we have now.

I good friend and mentor of mine Coach Rick Sofield of the University of South Carolina, said in a speech one time, "The grass actually is greener on the other side...... but you still have got to MOW THE GRASS!!!"

So I guess the moral of these "Getting Started Articles"....

Is to get out of the past....

Stop thinking too much about the future....

Focus on right now, because that's the only thing that really matters.
